FAQs

  • Proper storage is the difference between excellent firewood and unusable, moldy logs. Even the best-seasoned wood will deteriorate if stored incorrectly. Here's your complete guide to firewood storage.

The Golden Rules of Firewood Storage

    1. Keep it off the ground

    2. Allow air circulation

    3. Protect the top from rain/snow

    4. Leave the sides exposed to wind

Let's break down each principle and how to implement it.

    Location, Location, Location

    Choose your storage spot carefully:

    Best locations:

    • South-facing area with good sun exposure

    • Elevated, well-drained ground (avoid low spots where water collects)

    • Away from your home's siding (prevents pest issues and moisture damage)

    • At least 3 feet from structures to allow airflow

    • Convenient access for winter—you don't want to trudge through deep snow

    Avoid:

    • Directly against buildings or fences

    • Under dense tree canopy (limits sun and airflow)

    • Low-lying areas prone to flooding

    • Near sprinklers or downspouts

  • The Traditional Row Stack

    Most popular and efficient method:

    1. Create a base: Use pallets, 2x4s, or landscape timbers to elevate wood 4-6 inches off the ground

    2. Stack in rows: Place logs bark-side up in parallel rows

    3. End supports: Use crisscross ends or stake supports to prevent collapse

    4. Height: Keep stacks 4 feet or shorter for stability

    5. Cover the top only: Tarp or metal roofing, secured to prevent wind damage

Pro tip: Alternate bark direction to improve airflow and stability.

  • One of the most common questions we hear is, "How much firewood should I order?" The answer depends on several factors. In DFW, the winter season or cooler months run November through February. Your burning purpose and frequency also matter.

Supplemental Heating (Weekend Fires & Ambiance)

If you burn fires occasionally for atmosphere:

    Weekly fires (1-2 per week):

    • Half cord should last the season

    • Consider 1 full cord for frequent weekend use

    Daily evening fires:

    • 1-2 cords for the season

    • Mostly for ambiance, with backup heat source

Primary Heat Source (Wood Stove or Furnace)

If wood is your primary heating:

Small home (under 1,000 sq ft):

    • Mild winter: 2-3 cords

    • Average winter: 3-4 cords

    • Harsh winter: 4-5 cords

    Medium home (1,000-2,000 sq ft):

    • Mild winter: 3-4 cords

    • Average winter: 4-6 cords

    • Harsh winter: 6-8 cords

Large home (over 2,000 sq ft):

    • Mild winter: 5-6 cords

    • Average winter: 6-9 cords

    • Harsh winter: 9-12 cords
